What is Wegovy tablets?

Wegovy tablets are a daily oral form of semaglutide, licensed for weight management. The active ingredient is the same as in the weekly injection; only the way it is delivered is different.

It works on the GLP-1 appetite hormone pathway, steadying appetite, slowing digestion and helping blood sugar control. Because the tablet is absorbed through the stomach lining, it is taken fasted with a small sip of water.

In a 64-week study, people on the 25mg daily tablet lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight when treatment was combined with lifestyle support.

How it works

How Wegovy tablets works

Clinician-led treatment works with the body's own appetite signals rather than against them, which is why the weight tends to stay off while you are on it.

  • Quieter appetite

You feel less pulled towards food between meals, so choices get easier.

  • Fuller for longer

Your stomach empties more slowly, so smaller meals still satisfy.

  • Fewer cravings

The constant background thinking about food tends to settle down.

  • Steadier blood sugar

Fewer energy dips through the day, which means fewer hunger spikes.

One pathway

GLP-1

The tablet copies one hormone pathway, the same one used by the established weekly injections. The molecule is identical; only the route into the body is different.

GLP-1

Slows stomach emptying, helping you feel fuller for longer

Reduces appetite and the drive to eat

Helps reduce food cravings and snacking

Helps control the rise in blood sugar after eating

Wegovy tablets vs Wegovy injection for weight loss

Same molecule, two delivery routes. The choice is rarely about the medicine and almost always about which routine you will actually keep.

Safety

Common side effects for Wegovy tablets?

Side effects are common when you start any new medicine. Most are mild and ease off as your body settles, and going up more slowly helps more than anything else.

Like all medicines, oral semaglutide has side effects. In the OASIS trials, nausea, diarrhoea and constipation were the common ones. They were usually mild, worst in the first week after a dose increase, and faded within a few days as the body settled.

The most common Wegovy tablets side effects include

  • Feeling sick
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Being sick
  • Tummy pain
  • Headache
  • Feeling weak or tired

These are usually worst in the first week after a dose increase and settle within a few days. Going up more slowly helps more than anything else.

We will not prescribe it if

  • You are pregnant, breastfeeding or trying to conceive
  • You have had medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2
  • You have had pancreatitis
  • You are already taking another GLP-1 medicine

Questions

The things people actually ask

How much weight can you lose on Wegovy tablets?

In the OASIS 4 trial, adults taking the 25mg daily tablet lost an average of around 16.6% of their body weight over 64 weeks, compared with about 2.7% on placebo, alongside diet and exercise support. Roughly a third of participants lost at least 20% of their starting weight. Individual results vary widely and no outcome can be guaranteed.

Are Wegovy tablets as effective as the injection?

At the top strength the trial figures are comparable, and in some studies slightly higher for the tablet, at around 16.6% over 64 weeks against about 14.9% for the weekly injection over 68 weeks. The trials were separate, so the numbers should not be read as a head-to-head result. Adherence matters more with a daily tablet, because a missed or badly timed dose is absorbed poorly.

What is the difference between Wegovy tablets and Wegovy injections?

Both contain semaglutide and act on the same GLP-1 pathway. The tablet is taken daily, fasted, and stored at room temperature; the injection is taken weekly, at any time of day, and needs a fridge and a sharps bin. The tablet suits people who will not use needles or who travel often; the injection suits people who prefer to think about treatment once a week.

How long do Wegovy tablets take to work?

Appetite usually changes within the first one to two weeks, often before any change on the scales. Weight loss typically becomes clear from around the third month and continued steadily for about a year in the trials before levelling off. The pace depends on strength, starting weight, diet and activity.

Do you regain weight after stopping Wegovy tablets?

Most people regain some weight after stopping any GLP-1 medicine, because appetite returns as the medicine clears. Obesity is treated as a long-term condition, so weight tends to return unless eating patterns, activity and sleep have changed alongside treatment. Stopping is usually best staged with a prescriber, sometimes via a lower maintenance strength.
